Y4 Friday 24th January - Looking Back and Forth

Friday 24th January 2020 – Looking Back & Forth in Year 4

Looking back:

The children continued to use the text ‘The Whale’ to create their own scene settings.  We published our writing and now we are in the process of creating individual books.  Please look on the writing wall for Year 4’s contribution.

In maths, the children worked hard on perimeter of rectilinear shapes.  This was tricky, but we picked up some handy hints when calculating perimeter.

In the afternoons; we had a great session dyeing material as Anglo Saxons would have done.  We used red cabbage, turmeric and spinach.  The children were not that keen on the smell (neither was Mrs Benson next morning!)  These pieces of material will go in our topic books, when they don’t smell so pungent!

In science, we created circuits and the children completed a set of challenges.  This, they did with relish working really well and cooperatively.

Questions to ask at home:

  • What is a rectilinear shape?
  • Name four things Anglo Saxons used to dye their fabrics with?
  • In a simple circuit – if the bulb won’t light up, what could be wrong?
  • What does a switch do?
  • Can you name two of the Anglo Saxon kingdoms?
  • Where did the Britons live, when the Anglo Saxons invaded?

Highlights of the week:

  • Tag rugby with the Premier Sports coaches
  • The Whale publishing and creating a charcoal picture
  • Making electrical circuits in science
  • Reading quizzes on Accelerated Reader
  • Calculating the perimeter of rectilinear shapes in maths

Looking forward:

This week, we have POP UK singing rehearsals all week, in the mornings and one afternoon(information and order form in this week's newsletter).  These will be one hour sessions each day to learn songs.  On Thursday, we will be recording the singing.  The children are really looking forward to this (don’t worry no solos for me!).

The children will be using the book ‘The Whale’, now to create newspaper reports about the adventure.   In history, we will be looking at the different kingdoms and place names that come from the Anglo Saxon era.  As well as looking at society was organised. In maths, we will begin to look at multiplication and division (which will be helped greatly with TTRockstars).

Could you please make sure that your child has their P.E. kit in school on Friday from Tag Rugby.  We will be outside(unless it is pouring), so warmer jogging trousers and a jumper are preferable.
