Year 4 Friday 6th December - Looking Back and Forth

Friday 6th December 2019 – Looking Back & Forth in Year 4

Looking back:

The children continued with the topic in English of ‘Instructions and Explanations’.  This week we began to write an explanation text on the water cycle.  The children were particularly enamoured with the Blazer Fresh version on the water cycle.

Please see link below.

In maths, the children worked on addition with no exchange and also one exchange.  The children also worked with Mrs Benson on different methods of division as part of their arithmetic work.

The children worked hard in swimming and have made great progress, particularly in stamina now that we swim in lengths.

On Monday, we researched the highest peaks in the British Isles.  We were not completely surprised, when most of the mountains in the top 10 highest peaks were in the Highlands of Scotland!

We made ice-cream this week, using ice and salt.  This was part of our changing states work in science.  The end results were successful, Yay!  They were a bit on the salty for some of our palates! Yeuk!

Questions to ask at home:

  • What is the highest mountain in England?
  • What is the highest mountain in Wales?
  • What is the highest mountain in Scotland?
  • What is the highest mountain in Ireland?
  • What is the highest mountain in the whole of the British Isles?
  • How do you make ice cream with ice and salt?
  • Can you explain the stages of the watercycle.

Challenge time – 10 Housepoints for the children who answer the questions and bring them in by Wednesday

Highlights of the week:

  • Blazer Fresh – water cycle
  • Science work – learning about states of matter and making ice cream!
  • Spending time playing with my friends at lunchtime
  • Swimming lengths is much more fun!
  • Learning about the water cycle in English.

Looking forward:

This week we will finish our water cycle explanation texts.

In maths, we will look continue to look at addition and subtraction of 4 digit numbers.  We will decide on our top ten facts about our topic on mountains and start to create some seasonal pop up cards.

This week we will continue to practise the carols and songs for the Christmas Carol Service.  The dates for all the important events coming up are on the newsletter front page.
