Y4 Friday 29th November - Looking Back and Forth

Friday 29th  November 2019 – Looking Back & Forth in Year 4

Looking back:

The children began a new topic in English.  We started to look at ‘Instructions and Explanations’.  The children drew Horrid Henry’s under the guidance of Tony Ross via YouTube.  They also explored the differences between explanations and instructions.

In maths, we looked at negative numbers.  This is a tricky concept, also a good opportunity to revise our geographical knowledge – looking at mountain temperatures.  It also gave us an opportunity to hone our thermometer reading skills.  If you have the opportunity, please talk to your child about negative numbers with regards to temperature – this will help consolidate their knowledge.

The children completed their mountain dioramas by adding cloud cover; then wrote their evaluations.  The children practised their performance for the carol service with Mrs Benson.  Please could you encourage your child to go through this at home, so they’re confident with the words.

Questions to ask at home:

  • How do you draw Horrid Henry?
  • Who else does Tony Ross draw for?
  • What is the difference between an instruction and an explanation?
  • Can you tell me what happens when you subtract from a negative number?
  • Can you tell me what happens when you add a negative number?

Highlights of the week:

  • Swimming at Sandbach
  • Drawing like Tony Ross
  • Playing football with my friends
  • 5 minutes reading
  • Learning about the water cycle in reading
  • Drawing my cityscape and then writing a set of instructions

Looking forward:

This week we will continue our work on explanatory texts and write our own explanations of the water cycle, to support our work on changing states in science.

In maths, we will look at addition and subtraction of 4 digit numbers.  In geography we will be looking at the mountains of the British Isles.

This week we will continue to practise the carols and songs for the Christmas Carol Service.  The dates for all the important events coming up are on the newsletter front page.
