Year 1 we 17th November

Hi All,

This week in English, we will be continuing our topic on fairy tales.

This week we will be writing our own fairy story about an owl called Snowy White. We are writing our own version of Snow White, but an animal version. Our baddie is an Eagle Owl, who wants the softest feathers in the North Pole. Ask your child about it?

This week in reading will continue to exploring fairy tales, as well as focusing on decoding words. A big focus for us at the moment is to look at ‘inference’ (reading between the lines at what is hinted at). If you have the opportunity to explore fairy stories with your child this would really support their learning and understanding, as well as being a lot of fun.

You could:

  • Look at how fairy stories always seem to begin (once upon a time)
  • Look at how they end (they all lived happily ever after)
  • How do you know who is a kind character or wicked?
  • Are there any common themes that you and your child notice (goodies and baddies, animals that talk, wicked stepmothers, brave princes, castles, spooky woods and of course magic!)
  • Could you child retell the story to you.
  • Could you think of 3 words to describe each of the main characters?

In maths, we will be continuing working on addition and subtraction. This week we looked at systematic number bonds and identifying patterns. This was tricky, but the children started to see the patterns and then could complete the sums with missing numbers.

Please see attached picture - to help explain what we have been looking at in maths.

In the afternoon we will be continuing our new topic of old toys. Thank you for the fantastic old toys that have already been brought in. It was like a trip down memory lane!

Hopefully the children told you about the ‘Wellbeing and Mindfulness Afternoon’ we had on Friday. The children enjoyed many activities, such as Yoga with Mrs Riddell, a Scavenger hunt with Mrs Cuttle and Mrs Fairhurst, Mindfulness drawing with Mrs Flint, Decorating pebbles with Mrs Cooper and Mrs Timmins, Making clay wood sprite with Mrs Cowell and Mrs Freeman, as well as natural artwork with Mrs Raven. The children were very positive about the experience.

The children enjoyed the opportunity to be out in the fresh air for the afternoon, and now you know why they needed the wellies!
