Yr 4 Friday 13th December - Looking Back and Forth

Friday 13th December 2019 – Looking Back & Forth in Year 4

Looking back:

The children completed their water cycle writing, this will now be put in their science books.  I have put the water cycle link below again just in case you missed it last week.

In maths, the children worked on addition with no exchange and also one exchange.  The children also worked with Mrs Benson on different methods of division as part of the arithmetic work, in particular fractions of number (which linked to the homework).

We had our last session of swimming this week.  We assessed the children and we were really impressed with their progress, be it; gaining more confidence in the water, refining their swimming strokes or big strides in their stamina.  Well done Year 4.  That is it for swimming in Year 4, next term we have Premiere Sports coaches working with us on Friday mornings.  Please can you ensure your child has their P.E. kits in school, it would be awful to miss any of these superb sessions.

On Monday we completed Ten Amazing Facts that we learnt about mountains, as well as a quiz.

This week we have really been working hard on practising for the carol service and we really do hope you enjoy it.  Please can you make sure that your child has looked through the words to the songs that we sent home.

In maths, we focused on division of fractions with Mrs Benson and addition with no exchange and more than one.

Questions to ask at home:

  • What are the main parts of the water cycle?
  • Tell me some watery facts?
  • What is an exchange in maths?
  • Tell me what 1/5 of 20 is?
  • What is 3/5’s of 20?
  • Tell me an amazing fact about mountains?
  • What can you tell me about mountains?
  • What can you tell me about George Mallory? (let’s test their sticky learning)

Note – ‘sticky learning’ – Learning they remember – those facts or skills that stick in their heads.  We are trying to make sure that the skills they learnt in geography about mountains and George Mallory (history) sticks and goes into long term memory.

Highlights of the week:

  • Writing about the water cycle
  • Maths – using more than one exchange- ‘I got them all right!’
  • Swimming, the last day.
  • Watching the nativity
  • Creating our top ten facts about mountains
  • The Blazer Fresh Song.

Looking forward:

This is the final week of the term.  Thank you for a great term.

This week, we will complete our end of term assessments.  As well as making some creations!

All will be revealed later in the week.
