Y1 Friday 12th May 2023– Looking Back & Forth

Looking back:

Another great week in Year 1!

In English we have read the book ‘Where The Wild Things Are’ and explored the alliteration and similes in the book before writing our own. We have read my model text based on the story and answered retrieval and inference questions.

In Maths we have made arrays, doubles and equal groups.

In Geography we drawn or constructed an aerial view map of our infant site and used Google Earth to help us.

In PHSE we have discussed what it means to be a good friend and acts of kindness and unkindness.

Year 1 – Pupils’ Highlights:

√ Using rows and columns to make arrays.

√ Doubling by making amounts once, then again.

√ Making equal groups through sharing counters before drawing them.

√ Looking at our infant site on foot and using Google Earth to help us to make/draw an aerial view map.

√ Answering questions based on what we have read.

√ Learning about the events of the moon landing.

√ Choosing correct words to compare things to each other (similes).

√ Generating adjectives and nouns with the same initial sound (alliteration).

√ Practising bowling and battling skills in PE.

√ Recapping sounds from phase 5- ‘ue’, ‘ew’ and ‘ie’.

√ Learning Makaton signs to accompany the story of ‘We are going on a bear hunt’.

Family discussion questions:

  • Finish the simile ‘As high as…’
  • What is double 12? How can you work this out? What is the number sentence?
  • How many foods have you eaten this week that are from plants?

Looking forward:

Next week we will sequence the story, look at the features within the text and begin to plan.

In Maths we will looking at sharing as a way of dividing.

In Geography we will be looking at the human and physical features in our school grounds.

In Science we will be identifying and naming trees based on their leaves, as well as naming the different parts trees have.

Reminders:

  • Our 14 day Reading Challenge has started again, so please write each time your child reads so they can earn 10 house points for their 14 consecutive reads. I will change books overnight on a Thursday

  • Homework is spellings to learn and phonics word sorting based on our learning from this week. This will be marked together so any misconceptions can be address. Please complete this in pencil.

  • PE this half term is Friday- please wear PE kits on this day.

If you have any questions please ask.

Thanks again for your continued support.

Kind regards and take care

Ms Cummins
