Y1 Friday 28th November 2025– Looking Back & Forth

Looking back:

We have had a great week in Year 1!

In Maths we have used looked at addition by counting on to find more and using number bonds and part whole models to help us. We have begun to subtract by crossing out and finding fact families.

In English we have begun to write a retell of the story of Rapunzel.

In Geography we have identified the human and physical features of a village and town.

In Science, we predicted which material would be best used for a musical instrument and tested this out before playing instruments to see what sounds they made.

Year 1 – Pupils’ Highlights:

√ Writing a retell of the story of Rapunzel.

√ Testing which materials make the best musical instruments.

√ Using number bonds to help us add.

√ Finding fact families to 8 by using part whole models and counters.

√ Playing percussion instruments made out of different materials and identifying the sounds they make.

√ Practising our Christmas songs.

√ Moving our bodies by finding space and aiming when throwing accurately in PE.

√ Roleplaying when Angel Gabriel visited the shepherds in RE.

Family discussion questions:

  • What material made the best sound? Why?
  • If I count on from 8 to 12 will I say 7? Why?
  • Which material do you think made the best sound during our Science lesson? Why?

Looking forward:

Next week we will continue to write our retell of the story of Rapunzel

In Geography we will begin to identify the countries of the UK using an atlas to help us.

We will be rehearsing for our Nativity performance.

In Science we will look at the different parts that make up vegetables: seeds, leaves, flowers and stems. We will dissect vegetables to help us to sort them based on the properties they have. We will also look at what it is like in autumn.

Reminders:

Wb 8th December- Christmas Shop- please send money in a named envelope/purse on Monday 8th as we will be shopping that day.

  Nativity

Tuesday 16th and Wednesday 17th December 9:30am in the Village Hall.

I’ve sent home a laminated Phase 3 sound mat for the children to use. They can look at it and practise saying the sounds. If your child finds it tricky to spot sounds in the words they are reading or writing, the sound mat can be used as a helpful reference. It’s there to support them with any reading or writing they do at home.

I have sent home a fine motor skills sheet for the children to practise holding their pencil and tracing the lines as neatly as possible- please complete this in pencil. Thank you! This is due back next Friday, 4th December.

Book change on Thursday.

Please continue to read every night and practise the sound cards. If this could be recorded in reading diaries so I can track progress for our 14 day Reading Challenge. I am so impressed with how many children have achieved the Reading Challenge so far.

If you have any questions please ask

Thank you for your continued support
