Y1 Friday 5th December 2025– Looking Back & Forth

Looking back:

We have had a great week in Year 1!

In Maths we have learnt how to cross out when taking away and used a number line to count backwards.

In Science, we explored the different parts of plants that we eat through dissecting vegetables.

We have learnt to cut intricately and safely and quilled paper in D&T.

In PHSE we have looked at the story of ‘Ten Little Pirates’ to help us understand that games can be played by everyone regardless of their gender.

Year 1 – Pupils’ Highlights:

√ Cutting carefully and safely.

√ Identifying the different parts of vegetables that we eat.

√ Sorting vegetables based on their parts.

√ Crossing out to count backwards and seeing what is left.

√ Counting backwards on a number line.

√ Discussing how trees have changed from autumn to winter and how the weather is changing.

√ Practising for our Christmas performance.

√ Throwing balls accurately in PE.

√ Learning about the role of the Shepherds in the Nativity in RE.

Family discussion questions:

  • What type of vegetable is cauliflower? Carrot?
  • What question could you ask a witch?
  • How have the trees changed since autumn? Has the weather changed?

Looking forward:

Next week we will consolidate our maths learning with a quiz.

We will use atlases in Geography to help us name and locate the countries of the UK.

In Science we will learn about materials that are opaque, transparent and translucent.

We will be continuing our Nativity rehearsals.

In DT we will explore moving pictures and continue with our quilling project.

Reminders:

  • Christmas Shop- please send money in a named envelope or purse, with a list of who is being bought for and a named bag on Monday 8th December ready for Christmas Shop.

  • Christmas Dinner and jumper day Friday 12th December- please bring in a named cracker. PE kit to be worn with a Christmas jumper.

  Nativity

Tuesday 16th and Wednesday 17th December 9:30am in the Village Hall.

I’ve sent home a laminated Phase 3 sound mat for the children to use. They can look at it and practise saying the sounds. If your child finds it tricky to spot sounds in the words they are reading or writing, the sound mat can be used as a helpful reference. It’s there to support them with any reading or writing they do at home.

I have sent home a fine motor skills sheet for the children to practise holding their pencil and tracing the lines as neatly as possible- please complete this in pencil. Thank you! This is due back next Friday,

Book change on Thursday.

Please continue to read every night and practise the sound cards. If this could be recorded in reading diaries so I can track progress for our 14 day Reading Challenge. I am so impressed with how many children have achieved the Reading Challenge so far.

If you have any questions please ask

Thank you for your continued support
