Y4 Friday 6th September - Looking Back and Forth

Friday 6thth September 2019 – Looking Back & Forth in Year 4

Looking back:

The children have started back to school BRILLIANTLY.  This week we have explored the world of ‘Flotsam’.  This is a David Weisner book with no words, but it is a visual feast!  The children were gripped by the mystery of the flotsam possessions sand tray.  They speculated who all the flotsam belonged to.  They explored the underwater worlds shown in the pictures, created their own kenning poems and drew their own shell cities.

Year 4 – Pupils’ Highlights:

  • Kenning poems (Viking poems)
  • Looking at the Fotsam sand tray
  • Creating my front cover for my spelling book
  • Completing the Observe, Wonder and Infer sheet for Flotsam
  • Seeing my friends again.

Family discussion questions:

  • What does the word flotsam mean?
  • What did the boy see in the pictures?
  • Which was your favourite?
  • What was in the flotsam sand tray?
  • What is a kenning?

Looking forward:

This week, we will complete our kenning poems in neat as well as completing our shell city pictures.

In English, we will be beginning a unit of work on biographies.  We will be looking at George Mallory (as one of our school houses is named after him).  We will write our own mini biography for him.  In maths we will be looking at Roman numerals and rounding numbers to the nearest 10 and 100.

In the afternoons, we will be going to Sandbach leisure centre for our swimming lessons on Tuesday.  The children will need a towel, costume and swimming hat.  If your child needs to wear googles, please fill in a letter from Mrs Williams or Mrs Carroll or they will not be able to wear them for the lesson.

The class will be starting a new topic on mountains as well.
