Y5 Weekly Update 9.5.25

Friday 9th May 2025 – Y5 Weekly Update

Looking back:

It’s been a hardworking week in Year 5. On Thursday afternoon, we had a visit from a Buddhist monk in class. This was a very special experience for the children, learning about his faith and how he lives his life in Thailand.

The children have been planning an action packed survival story with lots of tension of drama, ready to write next week. In maths, we have been working on strategies for adding and subtracting decimals. In geography, we began to look at the variety of biomes in South America. In science, we continued to look at plant reproduction and seed dispersal.

Year 5 – Pupils’ Highlights:

  • We really enjoyed playing cricket in PE.
  • We are enjoying learning the pieces of music in Wider Opps for the Bridgewater Hall concert.
  • We loved hearing about the Buddhist monk's life.

Family discussion questions:

  • Can the children remember any information about biomes in South America?
  • Can the children tell you the golden rule for adding and subtracting decimals?

Looking forward:

Next week in maths, we’ll continue to learn about decimals, having a go at decimal sequences and multiplying decimals by 10, 100 and 1000.

In English, we’ll be writing our survival stories – the children are going to do a great job with these.

In our South America topic, we will be researching the incredible Amazon Rainforest and in science we will move on to look at vegetative reproduction.

Have a great weekend!
