Y6 - Looking Back and Forth - Friday 8th November 2019

Y6 - Friday  8th November 2019 – Looking Back & Forth in Year 6

Looking back:

A super week back after a restful half term and Year 6 are straight back into working hard towards their next projects.  We have begun our new text for English, which is Alfred Noyes’ narrative poem “The Highwayman” and we have learned lots of new vocabulary following our first readings.  Maths has seen us practising our knowledge of shape, with a particular focus on angles (or angels on occasions) and nets for 3D shapes.  We have completed our work about “Flight” and even begun to watch “Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines” as an extra little treat.  We completed our week with a fascinating talk from one of our parents – Mr. Sant – who came to talk to the class about his role in working with fabrics.   Mrs. Benson said she will never look at tweed in the same way again.  Our thanks go to Mr. Sant for giving up his own time to come to talk to us.  Friday saw an extended buddy session as many parents were able to join us for our coffee and chat afternoon.  This is the first time we have done this, so we hope that you enjoyed the time to catch up with friends and that you enjoyed seeing the Reception and Year 6 at play.  Another super week gone by – please do take time to look at the photos under the “Display Work Items” tab.

Letters issued Y6:

No specific letters this week but please look out for a Kingswood 2020 letter next week.  This will detail payments and dates for your diary.  Thank you.

Year 6 – Pupils’ Highlights:

  • Being able to sell the poppies to pupils at breaktimes
  • English – looking at the new vocabulary.
  • Maths with Miss Atkins
  • Maths in general
  • Science – we are looking at animals and humans
  • Seeing my buddy with his mum
  • Premier Sports – I enjoyed the indoor athletic activities

Family discussion questions:

  • Grammar Focus: What is the mini “chant” for Progressive Verbs?
  • Tell me who Tim is in “The Highwayman” and what his job title is.
  • What did Mr. Sant talk to you about?

Looking forward:

  1. The pupils will continue with their new topics next week and we are also looking forward to seeing you at our parents’ evening sessions on Tuesday and Thursday.  The Year 6 pupils are invited to attend these if you wish them to.  They are old enough to participate and to hear the information we shall be discussing, therefore we encourage them to come along.
  2. Please note that the pupils are enjoying a PE lesson first thing on Fridays.  It is essential that they have their PE kit in school for this session.
  3. Friday afternoon is also our “Mindfulness and Wellbeing Afternoon”.  The children will be able to choose an activity to enjoy, wellies might be a good idea (NAMED PLEASE).
