Year 3 Looking Back and Forth

Friday 17/4/2026 – Looking Back & Forth in Year 3

Looking back:

Firstly, I would like to congratulate Year 3 children this week on their wonderful achievement of 30...yes 30 marbles awarded to them by Mrs Cooper for their excellent behaviour and hard work throughout the three days I was accompanying Year 5 on their residential. I had no doubt that they would have a great week but to hear such a great report each evening when I called Mrs Cooper put an extra smile on my face - thank you Year 3!

The children have been busy this week being introduced to our new class book - 'Fox' by Margaret Wild and Ron Brookes. They have explored vocabulary, enjoyed the text, been suprised by the unexpected actions of the characters and have learned what a fable has to offer to the reader. In maths, they have worked hard on mass and capacity again and in Science, continued working on plants. In Geography, we learned about how the UK gets its seasons and how that affects temperature and rainfall and also how height above sea level affects the climate. In History, we completed our work on inventors and revised our learning so far and in PE, we began our work on cricket for this half term. Computing sessions saw us looking into spreadsheets in more detail and in RE, we explored the theme of forgiveness. Finally, we finished our week off by learning, through the eyes of 'Oliver' by Birgitta Sif, how important being yourelf is and how we can all celebrate our differences and fit with each other y complementing our personalities.

Year 3 – Pupils’ Highlights:

  • Cricket in PE
  • Our new stories
  • Computing with Mrs Cooper
  • Everything!

Family discussion questions:

Ask your children…

  • What is a fable and how is it different to other stories?
  • How does the height of the ground affect temperature?
  • How does the UK get its seasons?

Looking forward:

This coming week will see us begin the first steps towards our class dance for this year's Rose Day - always a big moment. We will continue to work on fables in English and will work towards writing our own, in Maths, we will begin our work on Fractions...everybody's favourite but we'll definitely get there and in Art, we will continue with our collage. Science will be based on plants once again and History will be our first session on Romans. In Geography, will end our UK topic by looking at topograhy, ready to begin our final topic of Volcaoes and Earthquakes. In RE, we will continue to discuss forgiveness and finally in PE, cricket will be our focus.
