Year 6 - Week in Review - Friday 9th November 2018

Year 6 - Week in Review - Friday 9th November 2018

We hope that all our Year 6 families have enjoyed a lovely break over half term.  My goodness, what a super, busy week we've had upon our return.

We have been dissecting Alfred Noyes' classic poem "The Highwayman" this week and we have learned quite a lot of new vocabulary along the way.  We've also been honing our skills with fractions and decimals and checking that we know all the important facts and strategies too.  We have continued to learn about life during World War 1 as we prepare for the national remembrance this weekend.

It's been a week for visitors to Year 6.  On Wednesday afternoon, Jack Watson and Ellen Memmot visited our classroom.  Not only are they Head Boy and Girl at Holmes Chapel Comprehensive School, but they are former pupils of Goostrey and it was a pleasure to see them back with us.  They have begun to chat to our Year 6 about the transition process to HCCS.  Our pupils found this really informative and they have had the opportunity to ask lots of questions.  Although July 2019 seems so long away, we are always looking to work with HCCS on improving the transition process and this is just one way that seems to be really effective.

On Thursday and Friday, our pupils were given the opportunity to learn and develop their cycling skills. We were pleased to welcome four instructors from Bikeability who delivered the Level 2 course to our pupils.  Thankfully, the weather was kind and our pupils are now even more confident and safe on their bicycles and the roads.

Here's some feedback from some of the pupils who took part:

  • I've learned how to do right and left turns safely.
  • It has been a great learning experience - I know how to do a U-turn now and I can control the traffic around me.
  • I know what the terms 'primary' and 'secondary position' are (and was able to demonstrate these).
  • It has made me more confident and I now feel much safer on the road.
  • I've learned that it is illegal to ride on the pavement.
  • I've learned how to park a bicycle, otherwise it could cause an accident.
  • I now know to always stand on the clean side if the bicycle.

We also thought our families would be interested in the feedback from the instructors about Year 6:

  • Their behaviour was perfect.
  • They listened well.
  • We completed all of our objectives before the given time because the children listened so well.
  • It has been a pleasure to work with them.
  • They have been a joy to teach.

What fabulous feedback from visitors to our school.  Year 6, we are very proud of you and think this is fabulous behaviour.  Well done.

Looking back over the whole week, this is what our pupils had to say:

  • I enjoyed creating the graphic novels (SF)
  • I enjoyed Bikeability (OK)
  • I enjoyed learning how to do a U-turn (FM)
  • I enjoyed basketball with Premier Sports (HHM)
  • I enjoyed maths (DH)
  • I enjoyed Jack and Ellen's visit (FM)

So, Year 6, how shall we top that week?

Finally - why not visit the waiting room at Goostrey Railway Station - some of Goostrey's Exhibition work is currently on display.  Thank you to Mrs. Cowell for working so hard on this display.
